When we first began our journey under the name Coffee Rugs in 2020, it felt like a natural starting point. Our handwoven collections are deeply rooted in the majestic slopes of the Colombian Andes—a landscape globally celebrated for its rich coffee heritage. The name served us well as we introduced the raw, tactile beauty of natural fibers to homes around the world.

But as our looms have evolved, so has our vision.

Today, we craft more than just home accents; we design structural, architectural canvases. Our focus has deepened into the exploration of elite natural textures, custom bespoke dimensions, and a material laboratory with zero constraints. To match this elevated chapter, we needed a name that didn't just describe a region, but honored the very history, grit, and spirit of exploration stitched into every fiber we weave.

The Spirit of the Explorer: Who was Geo von Lengerke?

The name Lengerke carries an extraordinary piece of historical storytelling. In the mid-19th century, a German engineer and bold explorer named Geo von Lengerke arrived in the rugged Santander region of Colombia. Captivated by the dramatic topography of the Andean mountains and the untamed beauty of the canyons, he became a legendary figure in the region’s history.

Lengerke was an builder of paths. He was responsible for engineering a historic network of stone pathways—known today as the Caminos Reales (The Royal Roads)—that cut directly through the unforgiving terrain of Santander.

These stone paths did something miraculous: they connected isolated, remote mountain towns, allowing local artisans, farmers, and weavers to share their craft with the wider world.

The Paths Where Our Weaves Are Born

This history isn’t just a distant tale to us—it is our daily reality. The very mountain towns connected by Lengerke’s historic stone paths are the exact places where our fique rugs are made today.

When you walk through these high-altitude Andean villages, you are literally walking on the historic stone trails Lengerke forged. Every morning, our artisan partners harvest the wild, raw agave fibers from these steep slopes. The fique cords are washed in mountain streams, dried under the equatorial sun, and spun entirely by hand using ancestral techniques passed down through generations.

There is a profound parallel between the work of the historic traveler and the work of our studio:

• The traveler looked at a rugged, untamed mountain landscape and laid down stone paths to connect people.

• Our studio takes that exact same raw, unyielding agave fiber and weaves it into structured, grounded foundations for high-end interiors worldwide.
